What is Digital Detox?

Digital detox is a time period when you intentionally stop using or reduce the use of electronic devices like phones, laptops, and most importantly social media. It’s like setting a goal to take a break from constant screentime to be recharged and focus on real-world, our duties and regain a sense of balance in life. However, its very difficult to built a habit of staying away from our electronic devices as we are all addicted to gadgets. As soon as we wakeup, the first thing we do is check our mobiles or we have to send important emails for meetings. That’s how we are dependent on electronic or social media.

When we go on a vacation rather than enjoying the view, we all are busy in clicking pictures to put that on social media. By clicking sometimes, we keep memory for future and by clicking continuously we lose our present even being there. Social media has got us hooked with our phones whether its posting pictures and getting likes on it or by simply making short span content which makes us scroll all day.

By Digital detoxification we can create an opportunity to reduce stress and focus more on real world rather than reel world.

How can one detoxify?

One can detoxify their mind by the following steps:

  • By setting goals: By having clear goals i.e. why you have picked your phone and only doing that can help you to reduce screen time.
  • Track your usage: Always check the time you are spending on your social media or set limits for that.
  • Plan offline Activities: Pick a hobby and practice that in your free time rather than mindless scrolling. That hobby can be playing an instrument, dancing or anything that you like.
  • Turn off notifications: Unless its very important try to keep your notifications off because notifications can disturb you by creating a urge to pick your phone.
  • Use airplane mode: By keeping phone on airplane mode and doing only 2 hours of deep work can make you ahead of world.
  • Use 20/20/20 rule:

Advantages of Digital Detox:

  • Mental health: Staying away from social media and devices improves your mental health by reducing anxiety and stress and it also improves our mental well-being. We become more aware of and conscious of our habits and behaviors.
  • Sleep: The blue light from screen of our devices affects our mental health and makes it harder to fall asleep. One should make sure to not use devices after sun goes down as it can break your sleep at night.
  • Productivity: When you stay away from social media you can allocate that time for work you have to finish.
  • Physical health: The time you were wasting on scrolling you can use that time to Build muscles, get your body toned, or simply loosing or gaining weight. It also reduces the strain in your eyes and therefore there are headaches. And your body posture also gets better.
  • Self-image: When you stay away from social media, you spend more time with yourself. You analyze yourself better and improve as needed. You become more aware of your own life .
  • Empathy: You become empathic person, as you start seeing reality of this world rather than reels. The reality of world makes you a soft-hearted and kind person.
  • Work life balance: By distancing yourself from social media and electronic devices you get a lot of free time and you start prioritizing your family and friends. You start loving your life again.

Disadvantages of Digital Detox:

  • Social isolation: There are a lot of introvert and shy people who find it difficult to talk to people in real life, but social media made it easy for them to make friends. So if these people stay away from social media, they might become isolated and lonely again.
  • Fear of missing out: People may experience anxiety about missing out on important social connections and events.
  • Impact on work or studies: As we detach ourselves from everyone, we don’t get complete information of office or school which can affect our work or studies.
  • Temporary discomfort: We may feel uncomfortable in the beginning of detoxification, as social has become an important of our everyday life.

How environment is helped by digital detox:

As we often overlook our digital habits environment is severely impacted. However, by reducing use of gadgets can have a positive impact on the environment. It helps environment by:

  • Energy conservation: Digital gadgets and the source that supports them, like network centers and data towers consumes a hefty amount of energy. And by using less of these devices we can conserve or save a lot of energy.
  • Reduction in E-waste: E-waste is the biggest issue because of rapid growth in numbers of digital devices. Taking a break can help to reduce this waste.
  • Lowering carbon footprint: The energy used by online activities are converted from fossil fuels which contributes in carbon emission. By reducing use of digital devices we can reduce carbon footprints.

In conclusion we can say that digital detox reduces depressive symptoms in a huge amount. By reducing use of this devices intentionally may alleviate your mood and desire to work.
