The Unspoken Struggle: Atul Subhash’s Suicide Case highlights the need for Mental Health Awareness.

Men’s Mental health is a very sensitive topic which needs to be addressed, and it requires attention, awareness and actions. The stereotypical masculinity leaves many men think that they have to suffer in silence.

The very recent suicide case on 9th of December Atul Subhash, a 34-years old software engineer living in Pune, has shaken the whole country. He left a 90 minute long video and a 24- page suicide note blaming his wife and her family for taking this decision. While the investigation is still going on, one thing is clear: Atul’s case highlights the urgent need for Mental health awareness and to be supported or given significance by our society.

In this blog, we’ll dive into the details about Atul’s case, how if he would have got support from the judiciary system he wouldn’t have taken this step. Or how if his friends and family would have noticed his mental health condition, the things would have been different.

Atul Subhash was a software engineer in a reputed company in Bangalore as a AI expert, he was married to Nikita Singhania who was also a software engineer. Atul Subhash and Nitika met through a matrimonial site. In January 2019 they got engaged and in April 2019 they got married. The couple had a seemingly happy marriage, but life doesn’t go as you plan it. And in this life Atul’s life a took a U-turn when Nikita and her family started demanding large sum of alimony and maintenance.

This all started from the first lockdown as Nikita wanted to start her own business. And Atul as a good husband never refused and gave her lakhs of rupees for that. Things started to worsen up when Nitika’s mother shifted to Bangalore to stay with Atul and Nikita. The demands didn’t stop, Infact they forced him to give 50,000 rupees daily to them. But this time Atul refused to fulfill their demand.

Which led to disputes getting worsen between them. Nikita started to torture her husband for money even more. And on 17 May 2021, Nikita left Atul’s house along with her son Vyom for Delhi. And she didn’t let Atul meet their son. And when he wanted settle everything Nikita demanded rupees 3 crore as settlement.

So, in the end getting tired of all this situation Atul to take a big step, of committing suicide leaving behind a 90-minute-long video and a 24-page suicide note, where he explained everything.

The Warning signs: Recognizing the symptoms of Mental health issues

According to few news article Atul’s family and friends confirmed that he had been struggling with depression and anxiety for a long time before his death. But they were not able to notice the warning signs until it was too late.

Here are some common warning signs of mental health issues:

  1. Not getting involved in any social activities, irritability or having severe mood swings.
  2. Loosing interest in activities you once loved or feeling distant from others.
  3. Trouble in sleeping and having no appetite.
  4. Headache, stomach problems or other physical symptoms.

The Importance of Seeking help:

Seeking help is very important step to address various challenges, including mental wellness, academic struggle and personal problems. Some reasons why seeking help is important:

  1. Seeking help can lead to improved mental health and can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
  2. It can lead to better relationships with friends and family, and with that it increases communication.
  3. Seeking help can lead to increase in productivity and performance at work, makes you more focused and you don’t be absent-minded.
  4. It can lead to improvement in overall well-being.

Mental health issues affect men as much as they affect women. According to WHO approx. 1 out of 5 men experiences mental health issues in their life.

Some common mental health issues affecting men include:

  • Depression: As men are always considered to be strong, they can’t open up about their problems and deal with them on their own which leads to depression. And if the problem is not solved it can also lead to suicide.
  • Anxiety: As they hide what they are feeling, or about their struggle they become very irritable and because of that they start having anxiety issues.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Men usually face a lot of traumatic issues and during that time not seeking help becomes the biggest reason of having PTSD.

Conclusion:

Men’s mental health is a very serious issue which needs our attention, awareness and action. By breaking all the stereotypes around men, we can create a comfortable society for men, which let them express their emotions and seek help.

Let’s work together to create a men can express them and prioritize their mental health. Tell them that Seeking help is a sign of strength and not weakness.
